Real Madrid Porter's Five Forces: the Super League play

Real Madrid is the world's highest-revenue football club — a record €1.185bn in 2024-25 — yet it spent €1.347bn rebuilding the Santiago Bernabéu and is suing UEFA for billions over the Super League. Read through Porter's Five Forces, both moves are the same play: an attempt to restructure an industry whose economics are turning against the traditional elite. Supplier power is the binding force — players and agents on one side, and UEFA as a monopoly supplier of elite European competition on the other. The Super League (and A22's 'Unify League') is a direct attack on that second supplier: an attempt to disintermediate UEFA and capture broadcast value directly. The threat of new entrants — state-backed clubs with near-unlimited capital — is what eroded Real Madrid's historic financial moat and triggered the whole strategy. And the Bernabéu transformation (€1m/day, 365 events a year, an NFL game) is a defence against buyer power and substitutes: owned, year-round revenue that doesn't depend on broadcasters or on winning on Saturday.
